Keeping Your Pets Safe During Fireworks: Tips for a Stress-Free Celebration
Fireworks might be a highlight for us, but for many pets, they can be a source of anxiety and stress. Loud noises, flashing lights, and the unfamiliar commotion can be overwhelming for our pets. Here are some simple but effective tips to ensure your pets stay safe and comfortable during firework celebrations:
1. Keep Pets Indoors in a Safe Space
Bring your pets inside before the fireworks begin. Create a cozy, familiar space for them to retreat to, such as their crate, bed, or favourite spot on the couch. This will help them feel secure and reduce their stress.
2. Use Soothing Sounds
Drown out the sound of fireworks by playing calming music. Classical music, in particular, has been shown to relax dogs. Search for a classical music playlist on YouTube and play it at a moderate volume to mask the loud bangs outside.
3. Provide Enrichment Toys and Treats
Distractions can work wonders! Offer your pet their favourite toys or enrichment feeders stuffed with Laila and Me treats.
In addition, leave out some long-lasting chew treats like shark tails, rabbit skin chews or moo tubes.
Chewing is a natural stress reliever for dogs and helps release endorphins, which promote relaxation and reduce anxiety.
This combination of mental engagement and soothing activity can keep your pet calm and focused during the fireworks.
By incorporating these options, you’ll not only distract your pet but also help them naturally manage their stress levels.
4. Exercise Earlier in the Day
Take your dog for a walk or play session earlier in the day before the festivities begin. A tired dog is more likely to relax and settle down when the fireworks start.
5. Ensure Identification is Up-to-Date
Accidents happen, and some pets may try to escape during fireworks. Make sure your dog is microchipped, and their contact details are up-to-date. If they wear a collar, ensure the tag has your current phone number.
By following these tips, you can make firework celebrations safer and less stressful for your pets. A little preparation goes a long way in ensuring our pets feel secure and loved during the festivities.
Just a reminder that fireworks cause great stress to our wildlife, If you find injured wildlife such as birds, possums etc, please contact Wildlife Victoria (or your local wildlife protection association).
