What is the difference between Freeze-Dried and Dehydrated Dog Treats?

Both methods extend the shelf life of fresh ingredients, but what’s the difference, and which one is right for your pet?

FREEZE-DRIED TREATS FOR DOGS

Freeze drying involves freezing the food and then sucking out the water content through sublimation, turning ice into vapour without passing through the liquid stage. This process preserves the structure and nutrients of the food.

Freeze drying retains a higher percentage of the original nutrients because the process doesn’t involve high temperatures. Many freeze-dried treats are raw, making them ideal for dog owners who prefer a raw diet for their pets. 

Freeze-dried treats for pets are light, and easily broken up into smaller pieces so are great as a training treat. They are soft enough for puppies, seniors, and are a favourite with cats too! They can be rehydrated to make more palatable if your pet prefers a wet texture. 

Freeze-dried treats have a long shelf life of up to 20 years when kept in a cool, dry place. Think astronaut food but for your pet! Freeze-dried treats are a great option when travelling and can be rehydrated and mixed with fruit and veggies for a balanced meal. 

Freeze-dried treats are typically more expensive due to the complex process involved, but the superior nutrient retention and quality justify the higher cost.

DEHYDRATED TREATS FOR DOGS

On the other hand, dehydration removes moisture by applying low heat over an extended period. The food is heated enough to evaporate water, but not so much that it is cooked through. This results in a snappier texture which is great for a training pet treat.

Dehydrating can result in some nutrient loss due to heat exposure, but still preserves most of the nutrients, and is still a very tasty option! This process slightly cooks the food, which might be preferable for owners who are wary of raw diets. 

Dehydrated treats are usually denser and sometimes chewier depending on the protein, size and thickness. Dehydrated treats can also be rehydrated making them versatile for different feeding situations. 

Dehydrated treats also have a long shelf life when kept in a cool dry place in an airtight container to prevent them from becoming overly hard or stale, or any moisture getting through. Dehydrated treats are generally more affordable and cost-effective for regular snacking.

So... which one do you choose?!

Both freeze-dried and dehydrated dog treats have their own set of benefits, by understanding the difference you can choose the right fit for your dog’s needs and your preferences. If retaining the maximum amount of nutrients is your top priority, freeze-dried treats are the better option.

Consider your dog’s chewing habits and the textures they usually prefer. Your dog might love both, or have a preference for one of the two. When trying anything new we recommend to start slow and watch for any signs of an upset tummy.
